Crossroads Block #4

I love Joanna Figueroa and her fabric lines. The Crossroads Quilt Along (sponsored by Fat Quarter Shop) is such fun.

It has taken me a while to get these done. This is how my cutting table looked while they waited for me.

I sat down and got the last three done.

Can't wait for the next installment.

Sewing Room Wallhanging

I finished the Cut, Sew, Press, Repeat wallhanging.

I made some changes from the inspiration piece (here). I took out the paper pieced blocks and replaced them with pinwheels made from bonus triangles. I added a third spool. I thought it would be cute to have one tipped over.

Other than the letter blocks and the paper pieced scissor blocks, everything else was by guess and by golly. I had to do the dreaded 'm' word...math. I revisited my Craftsy class from Camille Roskelley, Playful Piecing Techniques, and made the spools half size.

Ta dah! I actually got it finished.

I have my Canned Pears flimsy on the Lucey. I have a 108" wide backing. I didn't center the quilt on the backing. I moved it to one side so that I can quilt some smaller projects as I go.

I have added the extra blocks that I have put together for a pillow sham. This sewing room wall hanging will be added also.

Yes, I am lazy. I hate to load up several separate projects when one backing can take care of several projects at once.

Another Diversion

I have been distracted by another little fun project. I saw it on Moda Bake Shop, found here.
How cute is that? How could I resist? Here is my progress so far.

I was so enthused about the project that I even persevered through the paper piecing of the scissors. I think they are worth it. I am going to replace the striped stars in the inspiration piece with pinwheels made from bonus triangles. I am trying to find a pattern for the spool blocks that will be the appropriate size. I might have to do more math and adjust one that I have.

I am behind on my Crossroads BOM and the Starlight, Starbright BOM. I would like to get those done before I go on vacation so I don't feel behind when I get back.

2015 Designer Mystery BOM

Here is block #12.
It seems to me that options should have been offered for those who might prefer to have a Synagog. Or a Mosque. Mainstream culture always assumes that everyone is like them. Just saying. It comes from years as a social studies teacher who appreciates multiple viewpoints.  That is as close as I will come to a political statement.

The flimsy is done. Yeah!
I hate adding borders. Oy. This had many. Also, I mis-measured several times. I can't remember from the time I read the pattern and go to my cutting mat. CRS disease is closing in.

Another fun time is getting to the end of a border only to discover that I ran out of bobbin thread 6 inches in. Had to repin the entire side and resew. Am I the only one who is totally clueless about running out of bobbin thread? That is so annoying.

Anyway, this one is now off the design wall and added to the pile of flimsies waiting to be quilted.

Sherbet and Creams #3

This weekend I had time to complete the next step in the Sherbet and Creams Quilt Along from Joanna Figueroa. The assignment was to applique the pumpkin seeds onto the four patches.

Here is the stack of 80 appliqued blocks. I used Superior Thread Monofilament and the technique taught by Beth Ferrier in her Craftsy class Machine Finished Hand Applique. Zigzag length 2, width 1. Apparently, I can't count. I had three four patches left over. Maybe I did that intentionally thinking I would have options and could choose the ones I liked best. Yeah, that's probably it.

Joanna suggested putting another layer of fabric behind the sherbet colors to prevent shadow through from the four patch prints. To eliminate bulk and shadowing, I trimmed from behind as I usually do when I applique.

I did this on all 80 blocks. The red and the darkest tan didn't need it to prevent shadowing, but I decided that I preferred the consistency of eliminating the bulk of the four patch intersection seam.

Here they are. All 80 blocks ready for the next step.

Starlight, Starbright BOM

Rabbit, rabbit. It's the first day of another month.

I completed blocks 9 & 10 in the Starlight, Starbright BOM program. It is a red and white quilt (Captain Obvious). I have chosen to have red stars and white background rather than the other way around.

The 6" block was paper pieced. I don't like paper piecing any more than I like using templates. With every installment one or the other has been included. Complain, complain. The 12" block was rotary cut. Just what I like. Here are all the blocks together.

I am going to keep them up on the design wall for a while and enjoy the view.
